At Dora Gabay’s workshop, in a peaceful street on the outskirts of El Hatillo, plump women can dance their hearts out to the beat of the drums, make arepas seasoned with smiles, thresh cacao beans with their tender hands, sing and whistle with their heads adorned by feathers of various colors, or simply sit there to listen to your stories.
Always near are the stilt walkers and acrobats, who display balloons, flowers, paper ships and feelings amongst other wonders in spaces where resin and bronze become so much more than just sculptures; they become active universes. It is in Dora Gabay’s workshop where every step can be tracked towards itself. From the careful selection of its materials to the modeling and smelting, every procedure is indigenous to that homeland that’s filled with wonders and bursting along with humanity, expressions and detailed forms.
